Areas affected: Lesser Antilles (especially Dominica and the U.S. Virgin Islands), Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Turks and Caicos Islands, Bahamas, Southeastern United States, Mid-Atlantic states. Hurricane Maria is regarded as the worst natural disaster on record in Dominica and Puerto Rico. The tenth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record and the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide of 2017. Hurricane Maria formed in the Atlantic Ocean, first reaching hurricane status on Sept. 17, 2017, and elevating to Category 5 status one day later.
