In the early morning hours of December 7, 1946, a fire consumed nearly all of the combustible material of the Winecoff Hotel between the 6th and 12th floors and caused considerable damage to the remaining floors. One hundred nineteen persons were killed and another ninety were injured. This incident led to implementation of enclosed stairs for egress.
