At 8:23 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 1991, a fire alarm sounded at One Meridian Plaza, a thirty-eight-story highrise building that was built in 1972. In what was to become the worst highrise fire in Philadelphia history, the twelve-alarm blaze burned out of control for more than eighteen hours, resulting in the deaths of three firefighters.
