Iroquois Theater fire occurred December 30, 1903, in Chicago, IL, and claimed the lives of more than 600 people. Stage lighting ignited paint-saturated muslin on a drape which then quickly spread despite efforts to try to contain it to the stage. Many victims were trampled during the rush to escape, most others fell victim to the gas, smoke, and flames. This incident led to implementation of outward door swing in places of assembly.
