This 6-day course is designed to develop the managerial, administrative and leadership skills necessary for the first-time executive chief officer and chief officers who desire a leadership position in their agency. This course addresses critical knowledge and skills pertaining to the responsibilities of an executive chief officer such as:

  • Leadership and management.
  • Politics and the role of an executive chief officer.
  • Planning.
  • Liability and risk management.
  • Financial management and capital asset planning.
  • Human resources management.
  • Collaboration, cooperation and community engagement.

Primary audience: The course is primarily intended for persons who have recently (within the last 2 years) been promoted to a position as agency head (executive chief officer) of a fire and/or emergency medical services (EMS) agency. The candidate's appointing authority must verify this status through signature on the candidate's application or by separate signed letter.

Secondary audience: The secondary audience are persons who are second or third in position to assume the executive chief officer role. This includes elected or appointed persons with fire and/or EMS agency oversight responsibilities. The candidate's appointing authority must verify this status through signature on the candidate's application or by separate signed letter.

Incident Command System (ICS)-100-level and ICS-200-level training. Preferred courses are Q0462 and Q0463, available through NFA Online. Chief's signature attests that the applicant has completed required training.
