Captain Vollmer participated in a strenuous training exercise at a local community center the evening of December 18, 2017. The training involved lifting and carrying people and putting them on stretchers. The training lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes and concluded late on December 18, 2017. When training was concluded, Captain Vollmer went home for the evening.

Early the next morning, firefighters and emergency medical workers were dispatched to Captain Vollmer’s residence, he had suffered a heart attack. He was treated and transported but did not survive.
