Firefighter Sanders and members of his fire department responded to the scene of arcing wires contacting trees. The Fire Chief arrived first and found that the hazard at the scene was burning debris falling from trees into the dry grass below. The local electrical utility company was called and asked to respond to the scene.

The hazards on-scene were mitigated, and firefighters were preparing to leave the scene. Firefighter Sanders and another firefighter were waiting in front of their brush truck for traffic to pass so that they could safely get into the vehicle. As they waited, an approaching car slowed to allow them to proceed. The slowing car was struck from behind by another vehicle. The crash drove the slowing car into contact with the brush truck. The two firefighters were run over by the brush truck and dragged under it as it went down a slope.

Firefighter Sanders was trapped under the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other firefighter was severely injured and transported to the hospital for treatment.
