Chief Switalski and the members of his fire department were on the scene of a vehicle crash on a local highway. A pumper was set up as a blocker to protect those working at the incident scene.

A car approaching the scene passed another car on the left shoulder of the highway, made contact with the concrete barrier wall, crossed two lanes of traffic, and struck Chief Switalski as he stood near his vehicle.

Chief Switalski was severely injured. He was treated by firefighters and emergency medical personnel on the scene. He was transported to the hospital but died of multiple traumatic injuries.

The law enforcement report on the crash cited reckless driving cell phone use by the driver at the time of the crash. The speed of the vehicle prior to the crash was estimated at 70 mph according to a witness statement.

Edward Switalski was honored on the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland and was included in the USFA’s annual report Firefighter Fatalities in the United States.
