Firefighter/EMT Savage suffered was participating in a search and rescue training exercise. He was wearing full structural protective clothing and SCBA. Firefighter/EMT Savage and other firefighters completed a scenario in a room filled with simulated smoke.

At the completion of the scenario, Firefighter/EMT Savage and the members of his team went back to the first floor of the building. Without warning, Firefighter/EMT Savage collapsed. Other firefighters immediately provided emergency medical care, including CPR. He was treated by paramedics and transported to a local hospital where he later died. His death was caused by a heart attack.
