Review and Assessment of Data Quality in the National Fire Incident Reporting System

In 2013, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) requested that the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) assess and document the quality of the information from the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and make it more accessible and useable for NFIRS users. This document was originally completed and submitted to the OMB in September 2014 to fulfill the aforementioned request.

Explains what NFIRS is and how it is used. This brochure describes the benefits to participants in the system and how the collection of fire data can assist with reducing life and property loss by identifying trends that can then be used to develop effective mitigation strategies.

Annually, from 2017 to 2019, an estimated 2,770 civilian fire fatalities resulted from 1,900 fatal fires in residential buildings. This report focuses on the characteristics of civilian fire fatalities in residential buildings as reported to the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) from 2017 to 2019.

While the loss of our possessions in a fire can be upsetting, the physical injuries and psychological impacts that fires can inflict on our lives are often far more devastating. The great majority of civilian fire injuries that occur each year result from home fires. This report describes the characteristics of civilian fire injuries in residential buildings reported to the National Fire Incident Reporting System for 2017-2019.

Topical Fire Report Series: Cooking Fires in Residential Buildings (2017-2019)

From 2017 to 2019, cooking was, by far, the leading cause of all residential building fires and accounted for 51% of all residential building fires responded to by fire departments across the nation. Additionally, cooking was the leading cause of residential building fire injuries. This report describes the characteristics of cooking fires in residential buildings reported to the National Fire Incident Reporting System for 2017-2019.
